Smoke Break / Pause Fumée

Canada

Welcome to the Smoke Break program! This bilingual, virtual only program is designed by and for members of the 2S/LGBTQIA+ community to assist you with reducing or quitting cigarettes.  From the program’s advisory committees to peer support workers, 2S/LGBTQIA+ people with experience smoking cigarettes are involved at every step. We provide a tailored approach to better meet the needs of our community. This program is 100% free there is no charge for anything in our program.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Smoke Break provides services to 2S/LGBTQIA+ identifying adults (over 18) living in Canada with experience smoking tobacco cigarettes. Contact smokebreak@cbrc.net if you have questions about eligibility or are under 18 and seeking a referral elsewhere.

By registering for the Smoke Break program you will have access to:

  • One-one-one peer support: Identify your goals and make plans to achieve them, addressing any barriers in the way. Participants will typically have 4-12 individual peer support sessions. We recommend that sessions start out weekly, and frequency will change depending on your needs and goals.

  • Group peer support (optional): Sessions are facilitated by Smoke Break peer support workers but are intended for participants to share what is or isn’t working for them, equipping you with ideas or strategies that are working for others.

  • Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) (optional): Find ways to help manage nicotine withdrawal with NRT supplies like gums, lozenges, patches, sprays, and inhalers with your peer support worker. Supplies will be mailed right to your door with the help of our partner community pharmacies!

We can assist you with accessing other smoking resources in your province/territory and if you would like us to, we can help advocate with your healthcare provider for access to smoking cessation/reduction medications.

APPROACH

Cessation, quitting, abstinence… These terms suggest a desire to stop smoking cigarettes. For some of you, that’s what you’re looking for. Fantastic!

Cutting back, reducing, taking a break… These terms suggest a desire to change your relationship with smoking cigarettes. Smoke Break takes a harm reduction approach that will support you how you want. Sometimes, that means still smoking, but differently. Also fantastic!
